The band gave its first public concert at the BBC's Elstree Studios in July 1987. The audience, lured to the 'Grange Hill' rehearsal room, was a modest one but included, crucially, the Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood and the Town Council's Entertainments Officer, both of whose support over subsequent years has been a vital element in our development. Indeed, the town remains very much our 'spiritual home'.
Founded by flautist Ian Marshall at the BBC Elstree Studios, the Band's subsequent growth into the highly competent, versatile and entertaining musical outfit you hear today, is very much down to the leadership of Mike Crisp, formely a pillar of the BBC's TV Training Department, but also a composer of a good deal of music for television programmes. Mike assumed the responsibilities of Musical Director from a very early stage and took us from strength to strength until his recent departure for pastures new in France.
Over the 20 years of our existence we have played in many parts of the UK, including tours of East Anglia and the Lake District, as well as at a wide range of theatre and other venues in and around the City of London., including Westminster Abbey.
Abroad, we have given concerts in Paris and the Dordogne and in Germany's Black Forest. We provided the music soundtrack for a major BBC 1 documentary 'Charlie & The Duchess' recently. Since 1991, we have given an annual concert (recorded live at Maida Vale Studios) in support of the Voice of the Listener Trust, and each year we organise concerts in support of other charitable organisations.
The band is delighted to have as it's Honary President, Jimmy Perry, OBE.
Musical Director Andrew Morley
Andrew studied conducting and orchestration with Denis McCaldin at Lancaster University and subsequently won the Hertford Choral Scholarship to study with Peter Stark at Trinity College of Music, London. Having graduated with distinction,
winning the Ricordi Conducting Prize, he is now in demand as a teacher and conductor in and around London.
Andrew started his career as director and co-director of many ensembles in Lancaster, including symphony and chamber orchestras, chamber ensembles as well as choirs, choral groups and wind ensembles. He has a particular interest in twentieth century orchestral music and is the composer of Incidental Music to Frehlings Erwachen, Time Transfixed, and more recently Six Miniatures for chamber ensemble.
At Trinity, Andrew's conducting work included Aaron Copland's ballet Appalachian Spring with the TCM Sinfonia, Heinz Holliger's experimental study in breath, Pneuma, with the TCM Wind Orchestra, and a concert of film music arranged by the late Stanley Black with the TCM Symphony Orchestra. In recognition of his successes at conservatoire Andrew was chosen as Trinity's entry for the intercollegiate Harriet Cohen Memorial Awards.
Away from college Andrew has directed the Wallace Ensemble in concerts including Walton Viola Concerto, Mathias Harp concerto, Scriabin Piano Concerto and has given the premiere of a number of works by the Greek composer Basil Athanasiadis. Recent work includes Malcolm Arnold's Symphony No. 3, a charity performance of Stockhausen's rarely performed Gruppen for three orchestras and an appearance with the National Youth Orchestra Sinfonietta at the Lake District Summer Music Festival. In addition he has held teaching posts at Lancaster University, Trinity College of Music and currently works with the Trinity College of Music Junior Symphony Orchestra, The Wallace Ensemble, the Southend Philharmonic Orchestra and the Southampton University Sinfonietta.
In February 2004 Andrew was awarded first prize at the Allianz-Cornhill Musical Insurance Conducting Competition (formerly British Reserve competition) having received unanimous votes from both jury and orchestra.
Presenter Keith Clement
Keith was in at the beginning of the BBC Elstree Concert Band’s existence. He was in charge of the development of the BBC Elstree Studios, then as now, home to “Eastenders”, when the band was founded by his then assistant, Ian Marshall.
Previously he had worked in television Current Affairs, Training and Programme Planning. From Elstree he went on to run one of the BBC’s English Regions, before moving to ITV to help start up Meridian Broadcasting. Since almost everything he helped to start up no longer exists,
he is particularly pleased that the BBC Elstree Concert Band goes from strength to strength. Keith’s first appearance with the Band was at St.James Muswell Hill in October 2006, when he presented our first ever concert on behalf of the North London Hospice.
